A pattern is one of the important tools used for making cavities in the mould. In these cavities, molten metal is poured to produce a casting. The model of the part is to be produced with certain essential difference. It is slightly larger than the desired casting due to various allowances which are described in Chapter 1.7. It may also have several projections or bosses called core print. It also has extra projections to produce runners, risers and gates during moulding process.
