Based on the application of filler metals, the welding process can also be classified as follows:
(a) Autogeneous:
The process is one in which no filler metal is added to the joint interface.
Example: Electric resistance welding.
(b) Homogeneous:
The process in which the filler metal is added and it is similar to parent metal.
Examples: Arc welding, electron beam welding and diffusion welding.
(c) Heterogeneous:
The process in which the filler metal is used but it is of different type from the parent metai. Examples: Brazing and soldering.
