HYDRAULIC TURBINES

A hydraulic turbine is a machine which converts the potential energy and kinetic energy possessed by water (hydraulic energy) into mechanical energy in the form the rotation of runner. These are also called as water turbines. The mechanical energy turbine is further converted into electric energy by an electric generator which is directly coupled to the shaft of hydraulic turbine. The generated electrical power is known as hydro-electric power. Hydraulic turbines are the hydro-machines used to generate electricity in hydro-electrical power plants in which hydraulic turbine is a prime mover and main component of the hydro-electric power plant. This turbine is working based on the principle of moment of momentum. If the moment of momentum of water is charged as it flows through the rotating element, it results in the generation of torque which rotate the turbine shaft.
