When a body is immersed in any liquid, it experiences two forces. First one is the weight of the body w acting vertically down words. Second is the buoyancy force F acting vertically upwards. In case w > Fb, the weight will cause the body to sink in the fluid. In case w = Fb the body will remain in equilibrium at any level. If w < Fb the body will move upwards in fluid, The body moving up will come to rest or stop moving up in fluid when the fluid displaced by its submerged part is equal to its weight (w). The body in this situation is said to be floating and this phenomenon is known as floatation. The body can be made to float.

1) Increasing the volume of the body while keeping the weight same. For example attaching life jacket to a parson keeps the person floating.

2) Decreasing the weight of the body while keeping the volume same for example making body hollows.
